Squirrels in Your Own Garden

We often receive enthusiastic messages from guests about the many squirrels at Villapark Eureka and how wonderful it would be to have squirrels in their own gardens at home. That inspired us to do some research and share a few helpful tips: how can you attract these adorable squirrels to your own garden?

Before we dive into the tips, let’s first learn a bit more about the squirrel itself.

Behavior of Squirrels

We often see squirrels climbing trees, which they can do thanks to their small sharp nails and curved claws. Their beautiful bushy tail plays an important role, helping them to keep their balance while moving through the branches.

During the summer months, squirrels are active as long as there is daylight. They do not hibernate in winter but do rest more often. You’ll usually spot them in the morning, after which they retreat to rest again. Squirrels collect and hide their food supplies, but they are a bit forgetful and often forget where they have hidden their stash.

Winter is also the mating season for squirrels, usually starting around January. A female can give birth to between one and eight young at a time. The male is not involved in raising the young. Squirrels often reuse an old nest made by another squirrel. These nests are usually located high up in a tree near the trunk. Since squirrels do not like to build nests themselves, you can create a nesting spot in your garden. There are special nest boxes made for squirrels—just make sure to place them high in the tree, about six meters up, and close to the trunk, just like a natural nest.

You often see them in the morning; after that, they rest again.

Ideal Environment for Squirrels

The ideal environment for a squirrel is one where there is plenty of food available. They are often found in forests, gardens, or parks — anywhere with enough food sources. However, they prefer older forests because these usually provide more food and contain existing nests. If your home is surrounded by woodland, you already have the perfect setting. For most people, this isn’t the case, so it’s important to make sure there is enough food for squirrels in your garden. You can read below what kind of food they like best.

Food for Squirrels

Many people think that squirrels only eat nuts, but that’s not true. Squirrels actually have quite a varied diet! Depending on the season, they eat different kinds of food. In autumn and winter, they mainly eat and store nuts such as hazelnuts, beechnuts, acorns, and sweet chestnuts. They also eat the seeds from pine, spruce, and larch cones. In spring and summer, they eat the remains of their stored food, as well as buds, blossoms, berries, insects, caterpillars, and fungi.

Attracting Squirrels

To attract squirrels, you can plant food-rich trees and plants in your garden, although this can take quite some time. An easier option is to place a feeding house filled with store-bought squirrel food. If you want to make sure the food actually reaches the squirrels, it’s best to buy a special squirrel feeder. These are designed so that other animals can’t get to the food — the squirrel can lift the little roof to reach the treats inside.

In addition to providing enough food sources, a water supply is also important. Squirrels can’t get enough moisture from food alone, so they need access to fresh water as well.

In Summary
  • Create a nesting place in your garden.
  • Provide enough food (natural or store-bought).
  • Make sure there is water available.
