Easter in Twente
Experience Traditional Easter in Twente
Easter in Twente is a celebration rich in unique traditions. For the locals—known as “Tukkers” it’s all about warmth, togetherness, and a great atmosphere. Former residents often return especially for the festivities, while visitors from outside the region experience it as something truly special. An authentic cultural experience you won’t want to miss!
Below, you’ll find some of the most remarkable Easter traditions that are deeply rooted in Twente life.
Vlöggeln in Ootmarsum
Hand in hand, people walk through the charming streets of Ootmarsum while singing traditional Easter songs. The “Poaskearls” (Easter men) begin at the Easter meadow and lead the procession into the town, where the vlöggeln officially starts.
This unique tradition can be experienced on both Easter Sunday and Easter Monday from 5:00 PM onwards.

Easter Pole Dragging in Denekamp (Paasstaakslepen)
Denekamp is famous for its Easter customs, including the traditional Easter pole dragging and Easter fires. Well before Easter, two local boys are chosen to take on the roles of Judas and Iscariot. Judas acts as the leader, while Iscariot is his assistant a dynamic that plays a central role during the procession.
On Easter Sunday at 1:00 PM, the parade departs from St. Nicolaas Church in Denekamp.

Easter Fires in Twente
Easter fires are large bonfires lit at sunset as a symbol of celebration and renewal. On Easter Sunday, many towns across Twente host these fires, including Deurningen, Denekamp, Ootmarsum, Enschede, and Bentelo.
Whether an Easter fire takes place depends on local permits as well as weather and safety conditions. In case of drought or increased wildfire risk, events may be modified or canceled at short notice.
The closest Easter fire to Villapark Eureka is held at Het Hulsbeek, just over 1.5 kilometers away.
